Valkyrie Drive Wiki

"処女でありません!処女です!"
"It's not Shojo (Virgin), it's Tokonome!"
—Mamori, Valkyrie Drive Mermaid

Mamori Tokonome (処女 まもり, Tokonome Mamori) is one of the main characters in the series Valkyrie Drive Mermaid. She is the partner and lover of Mirei Shikishima and the progenitor of the supernatural viral phenomenon called the "Valkyrie Effect".

An innocent, naïve and childish girl, she is often made fun of because her surname is written with the same kanji for "virgin" (処女 shojo). She is an Extar whose transformation is a large curved sword, though she later gains the power to transform into a double-bladed spear through the Valkyrie Effect.

Unknown to herself, her power level is far greater than Mermaid Island's other inhabitants. As such, and with her compatibility with Mirei, she is able to unleash the Valkyrie Effect, the ultimate manifestation of the powers of the A-Virus which can manipulate - or even cancel - the effects in other carriers.

She liked Guru-Neko since childhood. Previously she was a second-year student at Tokyo Sakuragaoka High school.

Background[]

TBA

Appearance[]

Mamori is a teenage girl with dark pink hair that is almost always tied in pigtail braids with a cat clip clipped at the left side of her bangs and hazel eyes.

She wears the standard uniform that Veste has for girls with a pink bow tied at her collar. She wears a short mini-skirt and thigh high white stockings and pink shoes.

Personality[]

Mamori is a good-natured and gentle girl with a trait of speaking politely. She has an instinctive trust for her Liberator, even before understanding what is happening to her.

Although she lacks the physical strength and endurance that Mirei has, Mamori makes up for in bravery and selflessness. She will speak up against what she believes in wrong and and will engage in action if need be. In Episode 3, Mirei was willing to take the blame for the theft. However, Mamori ran to her aid and initiated her weapon transformation instead of Mirei triggering it. In Episode 5, Mamori transformed just for the sake of cutting fabric for Nimi Minimi's clothes due to the latter's enlargement. Also, to keep Mirei and Kasumi Shigure from fighting any longer (as Mirei would suffer future repercussions and Haruko Hibiki was used for ransom), Mamori ran up to the balcony where Adel was and pushed Ange. This caused both Hibiki and herself to fall off the balcony. Although Ange was able to grab hold of Mamori, Hibiki was able to reunite with Kasumi.

This shows that Mamori would put herself in danger for the sake of someone else, even if she never formally met them.

After Episode 8 where Mirei enhanced her abilities, Mamori didn't question her out of respect for her privacy.

She can be a little sensitive about her family name. Because "Tokonome" can be read as "Virgin," Mamori was often teased about her virginity and innocence.

History[]

Arrival of Mamori Tokonome and Mirei Shikishima[]

Mamori wakes up on the shore of Mermaid Island, where she was sent for carrying the Armed-virus. Although she is initially confused as to her whereabouts, she is quickly met by Aoi Miyasato and Momoko Kouzuki, who were sent by Kasumi Shigure to gauge Mamori's aptitude. The two ask Mamori if she is a Liberator or an Extar, to which Mamori inquires as to what they are referring to. Rather than providing a standard response, Aoi and Momoko choose to demonstrate these classifications by showing Mamori their Drive.

Shortly after, Mirei arrives on Mermaid Island and stands between Mamori and Aoi. Mirei dodges all of Aoi's attacks, and activates her Drive, revealing Mamori to be an Extar and Mirei to be a Liberator. Mirei defeats Aoi and Momoko, leaving them unconscious on the beach.

Mirei walks Mamori to the castle, where they enter directly through the arena. There, they meet Kibami Saejima and Ichiha Shirasu, who also serve to test the new transfers' abilities. After Kibami uses her Drive, Mirei and Mamori attempt to avoid conflict by refusing to participate in the fight. When Mirei determines that they cannot carry on without fighting, she apologizes to Mamori, and then completes their Drive again. Mirei promptly defeats Kibami and Ichiha, and Mamori returns to her regular state. After the fight, Mamori and Mirei are separated by Charlotte Scherzen and Ange.

Wedding Aisle[]

In the infirmary, Kasumi explains to Mamori why she was brought to Mermaid Island. When she is informed that Mirei was sent to the underground disciplinary room, she begs for Charlotte and the others not to do anything cruel to her. Charlotte takes Mamori's measurements. She is given a wedding dress, and is being arranged to become Tomomi Nukui's partner. Tomomi is unable to get Mamori to Drive, and before she attempts to use her more violent techniques, Mirei arrives and kicks Tomomi away before taking Mamori back. When Ange and Charlotte arrive, Mirei takes Mamori and escapes to the beach.

Atelier Torino[]

Meifon Sakura arrives and picks Mirei and Mamori up and takes them to Atelier Torino. Torino Kazami invites them to stay at Atelier Torino, which Mamori and Mirei accept.

Wärter arrives at Atelier Torino the following day, and arrest Mirei under the suspicion of stolen goods. Mamori tries to stop Mirei from shouldering the blame, but Ange quickly ties Mirei up using ropes. In order to save Mirei, Mamori initiates her Drive with Mirei. Despite their efforts, they are defeated by Kasumi's Zero Arm, but are fortunately saved by the arrival of Lady Lady. Mirei still attempts to turn herself in, but is dismissed by the gouverneur, Akira Hiragi.

That night, Mamori is subject to an illusion created by Miranda, and dreams about being led into the forest by Akira. Mirei arrives in the forest and Drives with Mamori. Mirei ultimately sees through the illusion and defeats Miranda. When Mamori wakes up in the morning, she believes that the dream she had was actually real. Mirei returns Miranda and her Extar to the castle.

That morning, Nimi arrives at Atelier Torino. Mamori empathizes with Nimi's story, and agrees to Drive with Mirei in order to cut a large fabric to create clothes for Nimi. Mamori and the others spend the day at the beach with Nimi.

The next morning, Nimi grows again. Despite this, Mamori convinces Nimi to go find her friend Noe Oya again. Nimi arrives at the castle, and Mamori and Mirei chase after her. Mamori and Mirei drive to free Noe as Charlotte prepares to engage with Nimi. Noe jumps onto Nimi, causing them to Drive. In doing so, Nimi is able to revert to her regular size.

Mermaid Festival[]

Meifon informs Mamori that the prize of the Mermaid Festival pageant is the Guru-Neko doll, which she had known was something Mamori had wanted. In doing so, she convinces Mirei to compete on her behalf. After the votes are tallied, Meifon and Mamori are surprised to hear Charlotte announced as the winner. Meifon, Mirei, and Mamori confront Hyouko Yundou and Kirii Futaba, who Meifon had caught swapping the real vote box for a fixed vote box. and Mamori complete their Drive. Hyouko and Kirii Drive too, and Hyouko is able to divert Mirei using her decoys. Fortunately, Meifon is able to defeat Hyouko on her own, which Mamori and Mirei witness as they run back into the building.

Momoka Sagara's Invasion[]

Mamori spends time with Mirei, Akira, and Torino in the hot spring and at Atelier Torino. Akira and Mamori end up sharing a bed for the night. The next morning, Meifon informs them of the hostage situation in the abandoned building. Meifon leads Mamori, Mirei, and Akira to the secret underground entrance, where Meifon and Mirei Drive before entering. Mirei is sprayed with Wärter paralysis spray, and the three of them are all captured. However, Akira is able to Drive with Mamori, and Akira defeats the captors. Akira, Mamori, and Mirei all leave safely.

Lady J, Rain Hasumi, Mirei, Mamori, and Meifon are assigned a special mission from Akira. At the coordinates, the group discovers an abandoned factory inside of a cave. The group are then confronted by the Artificial Arm, who attacks Mamori. Mirei takes Mamori and jumps into the river and swims to safety. After she regains consciousness, the two wander around the factory until they reencounter the Artificial Arm. This time, Mirei tells Mamori to run, which she does. Mamori finds that Mirei is losing her battle against the Artifical Arm, and stands between the two. Before the Artificial Arm is able to strike Mamori, Mirei puts her arms around Mamori and initiates their Drive. Mirei inadvertently causes the factory's destruction. Mamori finds Mirei injured in a crater. Together with Meifon, Mamori carries Mirei to Lady Lady and the group escapes from the collapsing cave.

After the battle between Charlotte and Akira, Mirei and Mamori go to the castle, where they find Akira strung up in ropes. Mamori takes Akira to a safe part of the castle, and asks Meifon to watch Akira in her place. Mamori finds Mirei fighting with Kasumi at Charlotte's order. Mamori, along with Hibiki Kenjo, jumps into the arena, where Mirei Drives and Kasumi carries Hibiki to safety. Mirei, having used the Valkyrie Effect, is able to ward Veste off, though rendering herself and Mamori unable to fight. Momoka Sagara appears at the scene with D5 and E9, who capture Mamori and escape.

Mamori wakes up in a bed in the castle with Momoka by her side. Momoka briefly explains her background to Mamori. When Mirei finds Mamori and Momoka, Mamori is leaning against Momoka. Momoka causes Mamori to Drive in front of Mirei.

Using Mamori's power, Momoka is able to fight everyone simultaneously, and absorbs them into Mamori's Arm. From inside Mamori's Arm, Mamori and Mirei Drive once again, breaking them out and freeing all the others. This time, Mamori and Mirei create the Perform Form, Valkyrie Drive. Together with the others, they defeat Momoka's Soldier Arm and bring an end to the conflict.

Gameplay[]

Mamori appears as a DLC character in Valkyrie Drive Bhikkhuni, but as an Extar she serves only as Mirei's weapon and is not playable on her own. Her outfit can still be customized, however.

Etymology[]

  • Mamori's surname Tokonome means "virgin/virginal, maiden" (処女).

Trivia[]

  • In Valkyrie Drive Bhikkhuni, Mamori has several unused battle quotes under Action 1-33 are unused since she never become a Liberator or hasn't trained for the first time in fighting skills just yet despite her issues. This might mean that at some point in development she was meant to be playable or are possibly leftovers from playtesting.
  • Mamori, along with Mirei, Rinka, and Ranka are the only four characters to appear in all three major releases in the Valkyrie Drive series. However, outside of their main title the characters are just bonuses or cameos.
  • Mamori shares the same English Voice Actress with Hibari from the Senran Kagura series (a sister series from Marvelous) specifically for the anime version.
